About the Council

The International Council on Artificial Intelligence is an independent, non-governmental body established to advance professional standards in the development, deployment, and governance of Artificial Intelligence systems worldwide.

The Council was founded in 2026 by a group of senior AI practitioners, researchers, and governance professionals who recognised the need for a credible, independent authority to define what it means to practise AI responsibly and competently.

Our Mandate

The Council's mandate encompasses five principal areas of activity:

  • 1. Standards. Developing and publishing professional competency standards and governance frameworks for AI systems.
  • 2. Certification. Evaluating and certifying AI professionals and organisations against published standards.
  • 3. Registry. Maintaining a global registry of verified AI professionals and accredited organisations.
  • 4. Ethics. Providing guidance on ethical considerations in AI development and deployment.
  • 5. Advisory. Advising enterprises, governments, and institutions on responsible AI practices.

Governance

The Council is governed by its Founding Council, a body of senior professionals drawn from industry, research, and policy. The governance structure is designed to ensure independence, transparency, and accountability in all Council activities.

Officer roles and committee appointments will be announced following the formal ratification of the Council's charter.
